About this piece

Commissions begin with a conversation rather than a brief. People often arrive with an object, a place or a stretch of time rather than a picture in mind.

The figure photographed here is one of Meg's own fibre-and-clay pieces: a hand-built clay head joined to a woven horn, a scaled clay body, coiled legs, sitting on a cane chair its own size. It is here to show the range, not because a commission has to look anything like it.

The usual shape is a first conversation, a direction agreed, then Placeholder: COMMISSION LEAD TIME of making with two or three updates along the way. A deposit begins the work; the balance is only due once you have seen the finished piece.
